Project Description:

The Commonwealth Honors College is a residential complex comprised of residential and teaching buildings at the center of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013. The facility contains a total of 1,500 beds, nine classrooms, faculty residences and a variety of support spaces for the complex. Virtual Building Logistics served a primary role providing Data Management and Building Systems coordination support to Dimeo Construction for all seven buildings during the construction phase.

The Data Management portion of the project involved:

  • Ensuring that the Dimeo Building Information Modeling standards were adhered to
  • Troubleshooting any problems that appeared
  • Maintaining up to date collision models
  • File conversions for the trades team
  • Generating final coordination sign off drawings
  • Fulfilling other project related tasks on an as needed basis.

During the Building Systems coordination process, Virtual Building Logistics worked in conjunction with the Mechanical Electrical Plumbing Project Manager and the building systems trades people to coordinate the environmental systems in each building of the complex before installation. Prior to the coordination meeting collision checks would be done with the results being sent to the trades for their review in an effort to make the meetings more manageable. This was accomplished by participating in numerous Goto Meetings where trade collisions were reviewed in an effort to complete the coordination process for each building of the project. Typically the coordination process was done level by level per building and upon completion of the coordination process, sign of drawings were created so that the onsite Project Managers for the trades could verify that the level was coordinated and ready for installation.
